    COLPOSCOPY

Advanced Diagnostic Screening for Cervical and Vaginal Health

Precise, magnified examination to detect abnormalities early and guide proactive, personalized care.

    What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. At Clinica Errami, we utilize a colposcope, a high-powered magnifying instrument, to perform this detailed screening. It is typically recommended when a Pap smear or other routine tests indicate abnormal changes in cervical or vaginal cells. By providing a significantly clearer and more magnified view than a standard pelvic exam, a colposcopy allows our specialists to identify potential issues, such as precancerous changes or inflammation, that might otherwise go undetected, ensuring a proactive approach to your gynecological health.

    Why is a Colposcopy Performed?

A colposcopy is a pivotal step in early detection and is used to diagnose a range of conditions affecting the female reproductive system. This includes identifying genital warts, inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis), and precancerous changes in the tissue of the cervix, vagina, or vulva. If the practitioner identifies any unusual areas during the examination, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be collected for further laboratory testing. This precise diagnostic capability is essential for managing women's health effectively, allowing for timely intervention and personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's specific findings.

How to Prepare for the Procedure?

    • β€’ Schedule your appointment when you are not on your period for the clearest evaluation
    • β€’ Avoid vaginal intercourse, tampons, and vaginal medications or creams for at least 48 hours before the exam
    • β€’ Consider an over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) shortly before the appointment
    • β€’ These preparation steps help maximize exam clarity, accuracy, and overall comfort

    How is the Procedure Performed?

The colposcopy procedure typically takes between 10 to 20 minutes and is performed in a setting similar to a routine pelvic exam. While you lie comfortably on the examination table, a speculum is gently inserted to provide a clear view of the cervix. The practitioner then uses the colposcope to examine the area closely, applying a special liquid (such as acetic acid or iodine) to highlight any abnormal cells. If suspicious areas are identified, a biopsy may be performed. While some women find this painless, others may experience a brief sensation of pressure or mild, period-like cramping that subsides quickly.

    1. Cervical Visualization

A speculum is inserted gently to provide a clear and stable view of the cervix.

    2. Magnified Examination

A colposcope and contrast solution are used to identify any abnormal or suspicious tissue areas.

    3. Targeted Biopsy if Needed

If unusual findings are present, a small biopsy sample may be collected for laboratory analysis.

    What to Expect After Treatment?

Following the examination, the speculum is removed, and you may be asked to rest briefly before resuming your day.

If no biopsy was taken, normal activities can usually be resumed immediately.

Light spotting or discharge for one to two days is common after the procedure.

At Clinica Errami, you receive clear follow-up guidance and support, including expected timelines for results.
