    What are Cervical Polyps?

Cervical polyps are small, fleshy growths that develop on the cervix - the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. They typically appear as finger-like or elongated projections and can vary in size. There are two main types: ectocervical polyps, which develop on the outermost layer of the cervix, and endocervical polyps, which grow within the cervical canal and are the more commonly occurring of the two. While cervical polyps are rarely malignant, they can cause notable discomfort and should be assessed and treated by a qualified medical professional.

What are the Symptoms of Cervical Polyps?

Cervical polyps often develop without causing noticeable symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include heavier than usual menstrual periods, pelvic pain, bleeding after sexual intercourse, abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods or after menopause, and unusual vaginal discharge that may appear white or yellow with an unpleasant odor. If any of these symptoms are present, a prompt gynecological evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause and appropriate course of treatment.

    How are Cervical Polyps Diagnosed?

    • β€’ Most commonly identified during a routine pelvic exam or Pap test
    • β€’ Ultrasound may be ordered for a detailed view of the uterus and cervix
    • β€’ Cervical tissue biopsy can confirm whether the polyp is malignant
    • β€’ Cancerous cervical polyps are exceptionally rare

    How are Cervical Polyps Removed?

The removal procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout. Depending on the characteristics of the polyp, one of two techniques may be used. Both methods are safe, minimally invasive, and routinely performed with a high degree of precision and care.

    1. Manual Removal

The polyp is twisted at its base using forceps and removed with precision.

    2. LEEP Technique

A Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) uses a thin wire loop heated by electric current to remove the polyp from the cervical surface.

    3. Clinical Check

The treated area is assessed immediately to ensure complete and safe removal.

    What to Expect During Recovery?

Following the procedure, mild cramping and light bleeding are normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Sexual intercourse and tampon use should be avoided for at least two weeks or until bleeding has fully subsided.

Women who have previously had cervical polyps carry a higher risk of recurrence, making regular pelvic exams essential for early detection of any new growth.
