Colposcopy Vulva

Women’s gynaecological health and well-being are of paramount importance.

At Clinica Errami, colposcopy isn’t just routine; it’s a pivotal step for early detection, allowing us to closely examine and address any concerns related to the external genital area.

What is a Colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to closely examine a woman’s cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. During colposcopy, a doctor uses a special instrument called a colposcope for vaginal and cervical screening treatment.

It is typically recommended when a Pap smear or other screening test indicates abnormal changes in the cervical cells. If the doctor identifies an unusual area of cells during the colposcopy procedure, a tissue sample can be collected for laboratory testing (biopsy).

Why is Colposcopy Done?

Colposcopy in Dubai can be used to diagnose:

  • Genital warts
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Precancerous changes of the vulva
  • Precancerous changes in vaginal tissue
  • Precancerous changes in cervical tissue

How Do You Prepare for Colposcopy?

To prepare for your colposcopy in Dubai, you may recommend that you:

  • Avoid scheduling your colposcopy during your period.
  • Don’t have vaginal intercourse or use tampons for 48 hours prior.
  • Avoid vaginal medications for at least two days
  • Take an OTC pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) before the appointment

How is Colposcopy Performed?

Colposcopy usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. You’ll lie on your back on an examination table with your feet in support, just as during a pelvic exam or Pap test.

  • During the examination, an instrument known as a speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to hold back its walls, providing a better view of the cervix.
  • A colposcope, a magnifying glass-like instrument, is then used to examine the cervix closely. A liquid, such as acetic acid or iodine, is administered to the cervix to highlight any abnormal areas.

If abnormal areas are identified, one or two tiny tissue samples (biopsy) may be taken from the cervix. Some women find the biopsy painless, while others may experience slight discomfort and crampy, period-like pains, which last for a few minutes.

  • After the examination, the speculum is removed, and the patient is asked to stay on the examination couch for a few minutes.
  • If a biopsy wasn’t taken during your colposcopy, you can resume normal activities without restrictions after the exam.
  • You may experience some spotting or very light bleeding from your vagina in the next day or two.
